Pop star Shakira confirms split with soccer star Pique after 12 years
"We regret to confirm that we are separating," the two said in a statement released by Shakira's public relations firm.
Colombian pop star Shakira and her partner, Spanish soccer player Gerard Piqu, are splitting up, the pair said in a statement released Saturday.
The couple have two children, Sasha and Milan.
In recent days, rumors of the demise of the couple's 11-year relationship had gripped Spanish media, fueled by media reports that Piqu, 35, had left the family's home in Barcelona and was living by himself in the city.
Spanish prosecutors accuse her of defrauding the Spanish tax office out of 14.5 million euros ($15.5 million) on income earned between 2012 and 2014.
They say she moved to Spain in 2011 when her relationship with Gerard became public but maintained official tax residency in the Bahamas until 2015.
Her defence lawyers say she moved to Spain full time only in 2015 and insist that her "conduct on tax matters has always been impeccable in all the countries she had to pay taxes".
Shakira has said in the past that Piqué is a great father and support, and they seem to have continued to interact in the past few years, like at the Balloons World Cup as a family in October 2021.
